Anguilla the most northerly of the Leeward Islands is a tiny tropical escape, an ideal location for a true island escape. Anguilla only 16 miles long and 3 miles wide is an extraordinary island with crystal clear waters. Like many other Caribbean islands, Anguilla is noted for its breathtakingly beautiful coral reefs. Apart from the main island of Anguilla, there are a number of smaller islands and cays that makes up the Anguillan territory: Scrub Island, Dog Island, Seal Island, Anguillita, Sandy Island and Sombrero. The island’s soil may not be suitable for mass agriculture but Anguilla’s main industry, Tourism is a flourishing sector and the island is a popular vacation spot.

Although Anguilla is one of the smallest inhabited islands in the West Indies, it is an island with a rich cultural heritage. The history of Anguilla; African Slavery, Amerindian Settlements and British Colonization is embedded in the island’s culture. Anguilla’s culture is a rich blend of African and British culture. Anguillans are very proud of their culture and Anguillans identify culturally with both Great Britain and the West Indies. Anguilla recognizes both British and African traditions and customs. The majority of the holidays and festivals in Anguilla are centered on historical events. In an effort to preserve the rich blend of Anguillan culture the Anguillan National Trust is a special committee established in 1993 to conserve Anguilla’s heritage, culture and natural resources. There is unity among as Anguillans to come together to work to protect their heritage.

Anguilla is a British overseas territory and as a result the country’s legal system is based on English Common Law. The judicial system is managed by the Magistrate’s court, the high court and the court of appeal. The islands politics is mirrored on the structure of a parliamentary democracy, where the Chief Minister is the head of the government and of a multi party system. Anguilla is a British colony and so the British monarch must be represented. The governor presides over the executive council and is the representation of the British monarch in the island, responsible for external affairs, internal security, and defense.

The islands capital is The Valley and the only airport the Wall lake airport is not an international airport, but Anguilla’s proximity to international gateways like Puerto Rico, St. Martin and Antigua make access to island relatively easy.

The island main livelihood is fishing and its offshoots. Established long before emancipation, Anguilla soil was not suitable for mass production agricultural use and the people took to fishing, livestock husbandry. As a result of the fishing industry, boat building and today, fish production is a driving livelihood for most native Anguillans as is boat building.

Anguilla is an island with much potential for growth, and its government continues to focus on its tourism and financial sector. Part of objectives is to market Anguilla as high end vacation destination, and as such the types of businesses investing in Anguilla are well known and well established famous offshore companies. Accommodation in Anguilla ranges from private home, villas and exclusive private resorts with spa. Condos and apartment, inns and guesthouses are also available.

Anguillans enjoy a tropical and casual and laid back lifestyle. Food and drink and music, all part of heritage form main part of social activities which are centralized to hotels and tourist hot spots on beaches.
